On en parle partout, tous les jours. Il est là où on l´attend. Avec son livre «L´Allemagne se détruit », il est le nouveau prophète de cette Allemagne qui n´osait pas dire tout haut ce qu´elle pensait tout bas. D´imprécateur, il est en phase de devenir victime, pourchassé par les bien-pensants de la politique et leurs acolytes des médias. Cela arrange ses affaires.

He is a topic of conversation everywhere, every day. With his book GERMANY ABOLISHES ITSELF he is the new prophet of a Germany that did not dare to voice publicly  what it thought privily. Being someone who imprecates on others, he is now about to become a victim himself, chased by political conformists and their henchmen in the media. This proves highly beneficial to the business,

C´est du pain béni pour son bizness. Il n´en attendait pas tant. Le tiroir-caisse se remplit et plus on en parle, plus il se rengorge, plus l´imprimerie tourne à plein régime pour imprimer son monument d´imbécilités.

Lui, c´est Thilo Sarrazin*, un allemand pure souche qui porte un nom prédestiné. Il en veut aux étrangers, Arabes et Turcs en particulier, à qui il reproche de pondre des enfants à la chaîne, surtout des filles voilées et de préparer le déclin de la Germanie.

He, Thilo Sarrazin*, is a native German with a predestined name. He is vexed with foreigners, Arabs and Turks in particular, whom he accuses of churning out children, especially veiled girls and of preparing Germania’s decline.

Cette cinquième colonne composée de bons à rien profite sans vergogne du système social. Pire, elle islamise l´Allemagne et bientôt, ce pays aux performances remarquables sera en dessous de zéro, entraîné vers le fond par ces hordes incultes, à l´intelligence limitée comme il le prouve, lui, dans son livre qui se vend comme des petits pains. La preuve, ils sont tellement bêtes qu´aucune association musulmane n´a traîné ce cher Thilo devant les tribunaux.

This fifth column made up of good-for-nothings takes unscrupulous advantage of the German welfare state. To make things worse, it brings Germany under the influene of Islam. And soon the country that performs remarkably well, will find itself below zero, torn to the ground by these unrefined hordes with only limited intelligence, which is proven by Sarrazin in his book that is selling like hot cakes. The proof : They are so ignorant that no muslim association has hitherto brought an action against the honorable Thilo.

Thilo Sarrazin n´a rien inventé. Il surfe sur la vague du marketing à petit prix qui fait de l´islamophobie son cheval de bataille. Ce politicien médiocre, à « dégueuler » selon l´expression d´une dirigeante du parti des Verts, avait déjà fait parler de lui en 2009. Mais à l´époque, il ne s´en prenait qu´aux Arabes et aux Turcs, c´est-à-dire à pas grand-chose dans une société où l´islamophobie fait des émules à tous les coins de rue.

Sarrazin didn’t make it all up out of nothing. He is surfing on the wave of low-budget marketing that rendered islamophobia its favourite pastime. This undistinguished politician (« disgusting » according to a Green party leader) already made a noise in the world in 2009. Back then, however, he took action against Arabs and Turks only, which is no big deal in a society in which islamophobia provides for supply in its own ranks around every corner.

Maintenant, cela devient autre chose. Déployant ses ailes, dévoilant ses crocs, Thilo Sarrazin a commis de grosses bourdes à l´occasion de la sortie de son livre. Il a dit que les juifs, comme les Basques, avaient des gènes pas catholiques ce qui a mis en branle l´establishment politique, très sensible à cette partie de l´électorat. Pas pour les Basques, ils comptent pour du beurre.

This time, it is going to be different. Spreading his wings, baring his teeth, Thilo Sarrazing cut a caper when the book came out. The Jews, as well as the Basques, he said, do have genes that are not quite kosher, which stirred up a political establishment that proves very sensitive when it comes to this part of the electorate. Not because of the Basques who count for nothing.

Du coup, le voici menacé d´être exclu du parti social-démocrate qui l´avait jusque-là materné en dépit de ses frasques, et tancé par la Banque centrale où il siège au directoire. Menacé et tancé, ne veut dire ni exclu ni licencié. La chancelière Angela Merkel qui sait où ce jeu risque de mener a demandé à la banque de le diriger vers la porte de sortie. Ses souhaits seront exaucés dans quelques jours malgré les atermoiements. La banque est, dit-on indépendante, en dépit du fait que c´est le président de la république qui  nomme et démissionne ses dirigeants.

All of a sudden, we find himself threatened with an expulsion from the Socialdemocrats that until then had mothered him in spite of his follies; and we see him blamed by the Bundesbank where he held a position as member of the board.** “Threatened” and “blamed” does not mean expelled or sacked. Chancellor Merkel who knows where all this can lead, has called on the bank to see him to the door. Her wishes will be heard within a few days in spite of some subterfuges. It is said that the Bundesbank is independent – in spite of the fact that it is the Federal President who appoints and dismisses the Republic’s top executives.

After completion of this article, a week after the Deutsche Bundesbank had asked the German President to relieve Sarrazin of his duties, he resigned from its board.

 Du SPD, où il compte des soutiens de poids, on ne risque pas de l´envoyer s´inscrire au NPD, la formation nazie. Le vieux parti préférera certainement le garder, car Thilo Sarrazin a convaincu une partie de l´opinion publique qui rêve, comme lui, d´interdire l´immigration venant des pays musulmans et d´Afrique noire qu´il a raison.

On the part of the SPD, where he is finding substantial support, one doesn’t want to run the risk to get rid of him in order for him to become a member of the NPD, the nazi formation. Certainly, the old party will prefer keeping him, since Thilo Sarrazin has already convinced part of public opinion that is dreaming, like himself, about placing a ban on immigration from muslim countries and sub-Saharan Africa.

          Comment en est-on arrivé là ? Depuis 2001, comme dans d´autres pays européens, les musulmans sont devenus la bête noire, sur laquelle se concentre la haine des coalisés contre les immigrés.

How did we get here? As in other European countries since 2001, the Muslims have become a red rag that attracts all the hatred from those united against immigrants.

La crise aidant, le populisme s´est taillé de larges parts de marché au sein de l´électorat.  Le racisme ordinaire est devenu un produit haut de gamme, très fréquentable pour certains, y compris des intellectuels. Un zèbre veut-il sortir de l´anonymat ? Rien de plus simple. Il installe à la porte d´un musée un cube noir rappelant vaguement la Kaaba et proclame qu´il  sera attaqué par des mahométans furieux de voir reproduit le symbole de leur dévotion par un artiste iconoclaste.

Boosted by the crisis, populism has imbibed vast chunks of the market share in the heart of the electorate. Vulgar racism has become a high-end product, very reputable in the eyes of certain people, among them intellectuals. An oddball who wants to  bask in the limelight? No problem at all. He puts a black cube, vaguely reminiscent of the Kaaba, at the doorstep of a Museum; and he announces that he will be attacked by some Mahometans, furious at beholding the symbol of their devotion reproduced by an iconoclastic artist.

Pour faire monter les enchères, on fait de même avec un opéra. Parfois la mauvaise comédie déclenche le prurit chez quelques extrémistes allumés, parfois elle retombe tel un mauvais soufflet.

To raise the bidding, one does the same with an opera. Sometimes a bad comedy causes a pruritus with some hot extremists; sometimes it inflates like a bad soufflé.

Dans le cas de Thilo Sarrazin, la mayonnaise a pris, car il remet en cause le modèle d´intégration à l´allemande, ce qui fâche évidemment les politiciens convaincus d´avoir jusque-là fait tout bien et donne du grain à moudre à une presse qui saute sur toutes les occasions pour vendre du papier sous l´intitulé : le péril est dans la demeure, nous sommes envahis par les musulmans.

In the case of Thilo Sarrazin, the bait was taken as he challenges the German model of integration, which obviously vexes the politicians convinced they have done everything right hitherto; and it is grist to the press that jumps on every opportunity in order to sell paper under the title: Danger is at hand, we are invaded by the Muslims.

S´il existe de vrais problèmes et aucune personne sensée ne dira le contraire, Thilo Sarrazin prône les mauvaises solutions. Populiste dans le sang, émule des théories racistes, surfant sur le mécontentement qui a d´autres sources que la présence des immigrés, il fait mal à l´Allemagne qui, à travers lui, voit ressurgir ses vieux démons.

Even though there are real problems, and no sensible person will deny this, Thilo Sarrazin advovates the wrong solutions. With populism in his DNA he is vying with racial theories, surfing on the discontent that has other sources than the presence of immigrants, he is inflicting damage on Germany that, via him, witnesses the resurrection of its old demons.

Hier, c´était les juifs, les Tziganes, les communistes et les homosexuels. Aujourd´hui ce sont les musulmans, des êtres décrits comme inférieurs, incapables de s´intégrer, donc à rejeter. Où ? Il ne le dit pas. Du moins pas encore. L´irruption du brûlot de Thilo Sarrazin servira-t-elle à engager un débat de fond, sérieux, loin des clichés sur l´intégration ? Je ne le crois pas. Du moins pas maintenant.

Yesterday, it was the Jews, the gypsies, the communists and the homosexuals. Today, it is the Muslims, human beings described as inferior, unable to integrate and thus to be rejected. Where to? He does not tell. At least not yet. The irruption of Sarrazin’s piece of invective – will it serve to launch a serious and thorough debate, beyond clichés, on the topic of integration? I do not think so. At least not at the moment.

Lors de la coupe du monde de football, j´avais regretté que l´Allemagne n´ait pas remporté le trophée pas seulement en raison de la très bonne prestation de la Mannshaft, mais aussi, et surtout parce qu´une victoire historique aurait démontré –ce qui a été fait en partie– les bienfaits d´une société ouverte, multiculturelle, pour ne pas dire multiethnique. 

It is not just out of respect for the excellent performance of the German team that I came to regret the fact that Germany did not carry home the trophee. Above all, this is lamentable because a historic victory would have showcased – what, as a matter of fact, took place at least in part – the benefits of an open and multicultural society, not to say a multiethnic society.

Il faudra donc attendre encore longtemps avant que l´Allemagne et ses élites, notamment ses politiciens, abordent les problèmes d´intégration autrement que sous le prisme ethnique.

Therefore, it will be a long time before Germany and its elites, first and foremost its politicians, will tackle the problems of integration other than in terms of ethnicity.

Otto Schily, ministre de l´Intérieur de Schröder disait systématiquement lors d´un talk-show télévisé à son interlocutrice, une députée du Bundestag d´origine turque : «Vous les Turcs …» et ce malgré les mises au point de la dame qui lui a rappelé, à plusieurs reprises, qu´elle était et députée et qu´il s´adressait à une députée Allemande. Quand on sait que Otto Schily se proclame de gauche, on mesure le chemin à parcourir.

When in a talk show on TV, Otto Schily, then Federal Minister of Interior under Schröder, systematically addressed his interlocutor, a member of German parliament of Turkish origin, with the words: “You, the Turks…”. And he did so despite the lady’s repeated hints that she was a member of parliament and a German member of parliament at that. Bearing in mind that Otto Schily considers himself as leftist, one can see how long a way one still has to go.

*Ce nom désignait au moyen âge les Arabes et les Maures. Sarrasin serait donc  d´origine orientale ou nord-africaine.

*In the Middle Ages this name denoted the Arabs and the Moors. Accordingly, Sarrazin would be of oriental or north African origin.
